Leeds United continues to hold a commanding lead in the race for promotion.
Although it’s become more difficult to close the Championship to Premier League gap, Leeds United has the financial means to compete at the top level.
Danny Mills, a former Whites defender, believes Daniel Farke will guide the team to promotion this season.
After going 11 games without a loss, United is feeling quite positive going into their matchup with Cardiff City on Saturday. After 29 games, Farke’s team leads the table by three points above Burnley, who are in third position.
“Leeds would be a great addition to the Premier League,” Mills told 0bet. With the support they have, they’re among the teams that could most likely compete and advance financially.
“The difference between the Championship and the Premier League is constantly widening when you look at other teams. Leeds has to earn the opportunity to be one of the clubs that was able to close that deficit.
“Sheffield United, Burnley, maybe even Sunderland are going to have a big say in that and so we have to wait and see, but the expectation from Leeds fans and I think the club, is that they get back in the Premier League.”
Even though United finished the season with 90 points, Leicester City and Ipswich Town defeated them to earn automatic promotion. They lost to Southampton in the Wembley play-off final, which prevented them from immediately returning to the Premier League.
According to former England player Mills, Farke needs to guide them back to the promised land in order to retain his position. “Yeah, it is promotion or bust for Farke,” he replied. “There is a tremendous amount of expectation. Last year, they were so close, and they gave in to the pressure.
“They dipped into the playoffs last season because they were unable to cross the finish line. And as everyone knows, especially after being up there, the playoffs are infamously tough. It’s quite difficult to be disappointed when you don’t get that automatic position.
“The one thing that worries me about Leeds is that they haven’t always had the best game management. They will occasionally be frantically attempting to score that third goal and leave themselves slightly exposed when they are ahead 2-1 with five to ten minutes remaining. Simply end the game. Simply win the match. The idea that football is merely for amusement is still widely held. It isn’t. Winning is the goal of professional sports.
“Ask any elite athlete if they perform for entertainment purposes. Or do they go to battle for victory? Was Jack Nicklaus there to provide entertainment? No. Was Tiger Woods there to perform? No. Was Michael Jordan there to perform? No.
“Humans leave to win. Then it’s a bonus if you can entertain. You can do some keep uppies and a few flicks and tricks while you’re winning and three-nil up. Use oles to get the crowd moving and pass the ball around.
“Winning is the primary goal of professional sports, regardless of level or sport. The players must continue to concentrate on it. Simply get out there and succeed.
