It’s time for Regis Le Bris to use ‘absolute quality’ Sunderland ace from the start vs Middlesbrough

On Monday night, Sunderland will try to bounce back from last weekend’s dismal stalemate against Plymouth Argyle and secure a crucial win against a local rival and another promotion candidate. Regis Le Bris acknowledged that his team was “lucky” to escape with a point from the previous match, as the Black Cats had obvious problems all over the field. Now that Middlesbrough is a more formidable opponent, Le Bris will need to carefully consider how he positions his team and which individuals he relies on.

It is imperative that Dan Ballard start against Middlesbrough.

Dan Ballard is one man we anticipate and hope to be in the Sunderland starting lineup on Monday. Due to injuries, the center-half hasn’t started a game since December 21st, but he has had brief appearances as a substitute in the last three games. Ballard’s strong, more athletic presence will be greatly needed on Saturday, as Sunderland will be displaying infrequent glimpses of defensive weakness and Middlesbrough has players who can actually damage the Black Cats.

Ballard has been a strong presence at the back for Sunderland in 15 games this season. His most remarkable quality is his composure and ability to understand the game, as evidenced by his 4.79 clearances per 90, 0.52 tackles per game, and 0.73 interceptions per 90.Additionally, he is a capable ball-playing defender, which Sunderland will need, particularly on the road, against Middlesbrough. Using the ball strategically from the back will be essential to maximizing possession if Le Bris can get his squad to play their typical, slick style of football.
