Daan Rots’ goal ensures that Twente beat Besiktas and advances in the UEFA Europa League.
FC Twente won a historic match against Besiktas on Thursday, advancing to the next round of the UEFA Europa League. Joseph Oosting’s squad advanced to the play-off round after Daan Rots scored the game-winning 1-0 goal.
The Tukkers knew they needed a win to advance to the next round. Their opponents changed managers a few weeks ago, appointing former Manchester United manager and player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. They too needed a win to have a chance of advancing.
They were so close to breaking the stalemate in the 22nd minute. Sayfallah Ltaief’s shot was so far out from the goal that it went right to Ricky van Wolfswinkel in the six-yard box. All the seasoned striker had to do was get his header on target, but he shot too low, causing it to bounce off the ground and over the unoccupied goal.
Twente were the superior team, and they had another opportunity to make it 1-0 in the 53rd minute. Sem Steijn did well to chip the ball into the area for Daan Rots, who took a touch and placed it on his favored left foot before shooting it high and wide of the goal.
They struck the post two minutes later. Ltaeif sent a ball to Steijn, whose shot deflected off a Besiktas defender and went out of the woodwork.
The Tukkers finally got their well-deserved goal in the 76th minute. Anass Salah-Eddine threw the ball into the box to Rots, who spun his foot around it to score and send the Grolsch Veste stadium crowd berserk.
Oosting’s squad hung on to the win thanks to a couple saves from goalkeeper Lars Unnerstal. The last whistle was received by loud applause from Twente fans.
The performance is even more impressive given that Twente only won their first game in the league last week. They’ll find out who their playoff opponents are on Friday at the Europa League draw.
