Reading winger Chem Campbell vows to ‘battle every week for what the team requires’ now that he is back until the summer.
The 21-year-old arrived on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer and has five goals to his name.
The Wales youth international’s contract was originally set to expire earlier this month, but he signed an extension to stay in Berkshire until May, appearing in three defeats against Stockport County, Leyton Orient and Burton Albion.
Campbell spoke to the media for the first time since returning from Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to the Brewers, saying, “I’m excited to be here and fight every week. Whatever the team requires, I’ll be there, and I want to get back on track.”
Campbell struck the crossbar after more than an hour of play at the Pirelli Stadium, but the Royals lost in the 92nd minute after tying the game at 2-2 with 10 minutes left.
Regarding his overall performance, the youngster stated, “I switched sides and am more comfortable on the left. I attempted to help–I believe I struck the bar–but we had plenty of chances. I’m not sure what the stats are, but we must have taken a thousand shots and such, so we were unfortunate. I’m just glad we came back into the game, even though we couldn’t finish it off.”
Set plays and crosses were crucial in the East Midlands, with all three Burton goals coming off balls into the box. This has been a recurring trend, with both Stockport and Leyton Orient taking advantage of the vulnerability.
“It’s exactly that–the set piece goes and crosses,” Campbell said when asked about possibilities for improvement. “We just have to keep an eye on the analysis to see where we can improve and make changes, such as adding someone. The gaffer will do everything for us; he’s always willing to help, and we’ll try to work it out.”
Bolton Wanderers will visit the SCL Stadium on Saturday as Noel Hunt attempts to break his team’s three-game losing streak.
