West Brom pushing hard to sign £39k-p/w “athlete”, he could be Mowbray’s next Morrison

When West Bromwich Albion travels to Devon this Saturday lunchtime, they will be hoping to do better than their promotion rivals Sunderland did against bottom-of-the-table Plymouth Argyle. With a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light, the Pilgrims demonstrated that none of the Championship promotion pack could undervalue them. However, Tony Mowbray will be hoping that his team’s decisive 5-1 victory over Portsmouth ensures they go into this match with the same ruthlessness on display. Mowbray had already tried to lead the Baggies to the top flight and was successful all the way back in 2008. James Morrison, a midfield standout, fit in nicely during his first season to help turn that promotion fantasy into a reality.

But the now-retired 38-year-old Morrison wasn’t only at the Hawthorns for the short duration; during the course of 12 illustrious years, he amassed an incredible 341 appearances.Morrison was an immediate success in the second division during the 2007–08 season, helping the Baggies win the championship with 81 points, but a significant number of those games would take place in the Premier League.

As a key member of Mowbray’s promotion-winning team, he would amass an outstanding six goals and five assists in 43 games before going on to become a modern-day legend in the West Midlands over the course of the next seasons. At West Brom, Morrison is now coaching the first team alongside the manager who formerly relied on him every week. There is optimism that this prospective midfield addition could be the second coming of the well-liked Scotsman.
