Sunderland ‘could get automatic promotion’ after attacking transfer move
Wes Brown, a former Sunderland and Manchester United defender, has approved the Black Cats’ loan signing of Enzo Le Fee from Roma, an Italian powerhouse. According to the 45-year-old former center defender, it was a declaration of intent by the team in their attempt to make a comeback to the Premier League. Few people would have predicted that Regis Le Bris’ team would be promoted automatically prior to the campaign’s start when the Frenchman was signed.Along with Leeds United, Sheffield United, and Burnley, Sunderland is one of four viable candidates for the top two automatic promotion slots in the Championship after going undefeated at home this season.
After 29 games, the Wearsiders lead seventh-place Blackburn Rovers by 13 points and fifth-place West Bromwich Albion by 11 points. Sunderland reportedly acquired Le Fee earlier in this month’s transfer window, with a £19.23 million required buy option in the event of promotion.During his time at Rennes and Lorient, Le Fee—who will play against Middlesbrough on his 25th birthday next week—was considered one of the best players in his position in Ligue 1. He played for the latter under Le Bris and has made three appearances in the Championship thus far, showcasing his class.
He is anticipated to be a key player for the rest of the season as Sunderland attempts to stay competitive at the top. When Le Fee arrived, many were taken aback by how a Championship team managed to close a deal for a player with the Frenchman’s level of talent.Brown, who joined Sunderland from Manchester United and played 76 games there between 2011 and 2016, is also pleased by the drive displayed by owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and sporting director Kristjaan Speakman.
“I think it is [a statement of intent],” Brown stated in an interview with Football League World. They recognize where they stand in the league, and particularly when you’re fourth and about to get promoted automatically, so I believe they realize they’ve fallen behind and slowed down a bit in recent years.I believe they have taken a slightly more aggressive approach this year, which is the best course of action. They may even need to sign another one to ensure they have that depth for the rest of the season, but it’s paying off. They may be promoted automatically with the confidence they’re displaying right now, which is what I hope they do.
