Sonny Perkins’ permanent departure from Leeds disappointed fan pundits, but they weren’t shocked.

With four goals and six assists in 29 games across all competitions so far this season, Perkins, who started his stint with Leyton Orient on the bench, has emerged as a key member of their team in recent months.

Earlier in the week, LeedsLive reported that his season-long loan at Brisbane Road was expected to turn into a permanent move.

The Whites were hoping to cash in because his contract was up at the end of the season, and the deal was expected to include a sizable sell-on clause.

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, the 20-year-old is now believed to have agreed to a permanent move to Orient, and his two-and-a-half-year stint in West Yorkshire appears to be coming to an end as the deadline for next Monday draws near.

Although Perkins’ failure to establish himself on the Leeds first team during his tenure at the club has disappointed our Whites fan pundit Kris Smith, his permanent departure this month is not shocking considering his current skill level and the team’s plans to return to the Premier League this season.

Kris told FLW, “I think you’ve got to commend the club’s efforts for constantly looking at youth squads across the country and trying to find these undervalued signings like Sonny Perkins.”

When we first acquired Perkins, it was a wise little investment. He and the young Mateo Joseph appeared destined to be important forwards for Leeds in the future when they joined the under-21 team.

It goes without saying that the transition from youth football to the senior level is enormous and cannot be overstated.

“Perkins’ failure to interfere with Daniel Farke’s plans, in my opinion, proves that. He has plenty of time to establish himself in the upcoming seasons and prove why Leeds made the investment, given that he is only 20 years old.

“A football player may be a late bloomer because development isn’t linear, but he will never reach his full potential while playing for Leeds.”

“We simply do not have the patience or time to provide him with the minutes that he sorely needs.” I believe it would be best for him to move permanently to League One with Leyton Orient.

He is currently receiving senior exposure in a play-off push, and since he was a young player there, he obviously has a close bond with the team.

However, Leeds can also benefit from including a sell-on clause. We are aware that we won’t be paying much for him up front, but we will be able to make money if he begins to exhibit the potential and qualities that everyone believes he possesses.

It makes perfect sense for Perkins to leave Leeds right away.

It always seemed doubtful that a player like Perkins would establish himself at Elland Road because Leeds hasn’t been able to give young players regular chances in recent years as the team has been fighting for promotion to the top flight or avoiding relegation to the second division.

He did, however, start his Whites career the way he would have liked to, scoring his first goal in just his second senior appearance against Cardiff in the FA Cup after coming off the bench to win the match in extra time to force a replay.
