Sheffield Wednesday ramp up transfer pursuit of Celtic Invincible as man Rodgers has long ‘admired’ a target

The Celtic icon has been linked to a switch to Sheffield Wednesday.

Before the transfer season ends, Sheffield Wednesday is allegedly closing an agreement to bring former Celtic

Invincible Stuart Armstrong back to the UK.

The seasoned 32-year-old midfielder, who signed a two-year contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps in September, is

expected to return quickly to the United States after playing just 11 games for the Canadian team.

After a successful six-year stint at St Mary’s, where he made 244 appearances, Armstrong left the English club

Southampton last summer. The Scotland international was reportedly “under consideration” for the Owls before

deciding to try his luck in the US, according to the Sheffield Star.

Now back on Wednesday’s radar this month, interest in Armstrong has intensified and the EFL Championship club

are hoping to conduct business as time moves into the final few days of the window, which is extended this year until

February 3.

Armstrong, a two-time Hoops triple winner, collaborated with current Owls manager Danny Röhl while the German

was Ralph Hasenhüttl’s assistant manager at Southampton.

Behind the scenes, more targets have been found, but the 51-cap international, who has played for Dundee United

and Steel City rivals Sheffield United, is also a fan.

Armstrong would bring a wealth of experience to Wednesday’s ranks, which could prove vital if they are to mount a

promotion push this term. During his time in Glasgow, he was at the centre of a contract dispute before manager

Brendan Rodgers helped settle matter after declaring his deep-rooted admiration for the player.

“I have long admired him as a player, so having him here for two years is fantastic for us,” Rodgers stated in an

August 2017 interview. He feels a little more at ease, and he can now concentrate on playing football. It was a matter

of getting it over the finish line, and I thought he always wanted to sign. Congratulations to him, his agent, and the

club for resolving this.
