Sheffield Wednesday are now among the frontrunners to sign a midfielder who is attracting a lot of interest from several Championship clubs, according to a report.
Wednesday could be busy before February 3rd
Wednesday had been quiet in the transfer season up to this point, but after completing a fresh loan agreement for Shea Charles last week, they are now looking to add a few more players to their roster before the February 3 deadline.
The Owls are trying to strengthen their defence, with Dominic Iorfa out for a few more weeks, and they made a loan move for Ipswich Town’s Harry Clarke, but appear to have lost out to rivals Sheffield United. Ryo Hatsuse, Vissel Kobe’s left-back, has pleased Danny Rohl, and all parties are eager to finalize a transaction, as his contract expires on January 31st.
Earlier this week, it was announced that Wednesday had entered the hunt for Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Stuart Armstrong, and there has been an update on their pursuit.
According to Football League World, the Owls are putting in extra effort to recruit Armstrong, who is also being pursued by fellow Championship play-off contenders West Brom. A number of second-tier clubs are rumored to be interested in the midfielder, but the two aforementioned clubs are the frontrunners because they are the most eager to complete the transfer.
Rohl was eager to sign the former Southampton man in the summer after working with him at St. Mary’s, and he has now renewed his interest.
The 32-year-old was instrumental in helping the Saints win promotion from the Championship last season before transferring to the MLS, and it now appears like he may get a chance to return to England soon.
Armstrong could be a fantastic signing for the Owls
The £39k-per-week midfielder has impressed for several years, including periods in England and the Scottish Premiership, earning praise from former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.
“He’s also got a good range of pass, can shoot and is good on set-pieces. So he’ s really developing very well and, to put on top of that, he’s a really bright boy.”
At Parkhead, the Inverness-born maestro helped the club win four Scottish Premiership titles, and he has 51 caps for Scotland.
As a result, Armstrong might be an excellent addition to Rohl’s squad, although it is unclear whether he should be a priority target before the deadline.
Wednesday are well-stocked in the middle of the park after re-signing Charles on loan last week, but they are a touch short on defensive alternatives due to Iorfa’s injury and the fact that they missed out on Clarke. As a result, Rohl should prioritize the acquisition of a defender before pursuing a deal for Armstrong.
