Swansea City captain Matt Grimes is allegedly scheduled to have a medical at Coventry City on Thursday in preparation for a £3 million to £4 million transfer.
The move will come as a tremendous shock to Swans fans, and it adds to proof that the January transfer window is the club’s kryptonite, depleting their strength and self-belief every year.
Grimes is not only the club’s finest player; he is also their most influential and consistent performer, as well as the focal point of nearly their whole style of play.
However, the clubs are thought to have struck a final agreement on a transfer fee for the 29-year-old.
Grimes has been a key member of Swansea’s team for nearly a decade, but he is believed to have agreed personal terms with the Sky Blues, making him the first major acquisition of Frank Lampard’s tenure at Coventry.
Grimes, who signed a new deal with the Swans last August, has been a steady presence since joining from Exeter City in 2014. He has made 333 appearances and scored 16 goals.
This season, he has been a constant under head coach Luke Williams, starting all 32 games across all competitions.
For Swansea fans, the departure of their highest-paid player and club captain heightens the urgency of securing reinforcements before the transfer window ends, raising fears of a coming battle to prevent relegation to League One.
However, with Coventry aggressively wanting to strengthen their midfield, Grimes has stated a desire to relocate to the CBS Arena, forcing Swansea to approve the deal.
The purchase, allegedly valued up to £4 million considering add-ons, is a huge coup for Coventry as they look to climb the Championship table.
The Sky Blues are currently 12th, four points ahead of Swansea, and have won three consecutive league games. Grimes’ presence is likely to bolster their playoff chances.
Grimes said an emotional farewell to his Swansea teammates on Tuesday at the club’s training field, with the deal set to be completed later this week.
However, it is unclear whether he will be registered in time to face his previous team when Coventry go to Swansea for a league match on Saturday.
The move reflects Lampard’s desire for Coventry, who has highlighted Grimes as a priority goal for improving the depth and quality of his squad.
Grimes’ solid efforts since Swansea’s relegation from the Premier League in 2018 have earned him a fan following, but his decision to seek a new challenge marks a watershed moment for both teams as they enter the second half of the Championship season.
