“It’s crazy” – Carlton Palmer reacts to Harry Darling news involving Sheffield United and Swansea City

Carlton Palmer believes that Swansea City have handled the situation surrounding Harry Darling very poorly amid interest from Sheffield United.

According to The Star, the Blades are considering a bid for the centre-back in January.

The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and the Swans risk losing him for free in the summer unless a new deal is reached.

However, Sheffield United’s desire may complicate matters, potentially opening the door to a trade before the February 3 deadline.

Palmer believes Swansea have put themselves in a bad situation with Darling, and that they should never have been at risk of losing him for nothing.

He believes the centre-back has had a wonderful season and would be an excellent addition to Chris Wilder’s team as they seek promotion to the Premier League.

“How Swansea City have allowed this situation to happen with their centre-back Harry Darling, contract set to expire this summer that’s prompted Sheffield United and Chris Wilder to be interested in the centre-back, it’s crazy how the club have let such an influential player run down his contract,” Palmer commented to Football League World.

“He’s been absolutely outstanding for Swansea this season, having played every minute of Championship game before the 5-1 defeat at Norwich City.

“He’s an important player for Luke Williams, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult.

“Sheffield United, who are on the cusp of returning to the Premier League, are looking to replace Harry Souttar and maybe offer the 25-year-old a path back to the league.

“There will be competition for his signature, apparently Birmingham are interested as well, but I can’t see him wanting to drop down to League One.”

Palmer issues Darling transfer fee prediction

Palmer believes that any deal involving Darling will cost between £4 and £5 million, and Swansea must do everything they can to avoid losing him for free in the summer.

“But with Swansea, they would only have two senior centre-defenders available to them, and with the transfer deadline so close, it would be hard to get a replacement,” said the player.

“But the problem is that he’s out of contract, so if he refuses to sign a new contract and they can’t negotiate terms — which I doubt he’ll sign — Swansea will have to let him go, which is absurd.

“The players leaving the football club puts them in a very difficult situation.

“The valuation being bandied is £10 million, and they’re not going to get anywhere near that since his contract has expired.

“Sheffield United aren’t foolish.
