Champions League record smashed by Celtic’s rivals for Rangers

Officially, Rangers are not the worst Champions League team ever.

Last night, one of Celtic’s opponents from this season’s UEFA campaign broke the unwelcome record.

After eight games, BSC Young Boys had zero points and a goal differential of minus-21 at the end of the new league phase.

Red Star Belgrade, who also missed out in the playoffs, defeated them 1-0 at home last night, sealing their doom.

In terms of statistics, Rangers’ final appearance in the UCL group stage under Giovanni van Bronckhorst in 2022 made them the worst team ever to play in the competition.

Liverpool, Ajax, and Napoli defeated the Scottish Premiership‘s biggest teams in all six of their games. They only managed one goal, during Liverpool’s 7-1 thumping of them at Ibrox, giving them a -20 goal differential.

Young Boys have officially removed Rangers’ “horror tag” after playing two more games under the new Champions League format.

Naturally, there are two possible interpretations of the Swiss team’s two extra games. In addition to having more games against top-tier opponents to cope with, they have also lost two more opportunities to at least earn a point.

Celtic overcame Young Boys 1-0 in Glasgow last week; they will be matched against either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the playoffs.

Rangers return to action tonight as they play Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League’s final matchday, hosted by Philippe Clement’s team.
