Bristol City manager issues warning after Stoke City transfer offer rejected

Liam Manning, the manager of Bristol City, has provided an update on Mark Sykes after it was reported that Stoke City’s transfer attempt for the player was turned down.

Although the 27-year-old winger’s contract expires in the summer, it is believed that negotiations are on to extend it. The Potters have expressed interest in hiring the Republic of Ireland international.

According to Sky Sports, Stoke made an attempt to entice him out of Ashton Gate in January. Bristol Live has recently acknowledged that an offer was flatly turned down.

Talking to the media, the Robins’ head coach said: “There’s been a little bit of interest yeah, I sat with Syksey yesterday and again today and I think it’s one of those. He’s really happy here, he’s enjoying it.

“I think he’s really hit a level recently with us, I know before the injury and since coming back he’s done extremely well. I had a good chat with Syksey, for me I don’t see him going anywhere.

“Those conversations [around his extension] are ongoing at the minute.”

Since moving from Oxford United to Bristol City in 2022, Sykes has grown to be a beloved member of the team. Playing on the left or right of a midfield, he has made 15 league games this season and contributed two assists, demonstrating his versatility.

If Mark Robins is successful, he will join striker Ali Al-Hamadi, who is on loan from Ipswich Town, and left-back Josh Wilson-Esbrand, who is on loan from Manchester City, in joining Stoke during the current winter transfer window. Lewis Baker and Nathan Lowe, who were on loan at Blackburn Rovers and Walsall, respectively, have been brought back to the bet365 Stadium.
