Birmingham City’s promotion rivals Wrexham ‘pushing’ for 11-goal striker as Wycombe Wanderers dealt blow

Birmingham City and their rivals have until the end of the window to bring in some new faces

Birmingham City triumphed 1-0 away at Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night. Winger Keshi Anderson scored their winner at the John Smith’s Stadium as they picked up an important three points in West Yorkshire.

The Blues are top of the League One table as they aim an immediate promotion back to the Championship. They were relegated last year after finishing in the bottom three in the top flight.
Chris Davies was named as their manager last summer. He has since acclimated well to life in the Football League following his coaching term at Tottenham Hotspur.

Wrexham eye Sam Smith

Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham are among the clubs chasing Birmingham. According to Football League World, they are ‘pushing’ for a deal to capture Reading striker Sam Smith.
Smith, 26, is under contract with the Royals through the summer of 2026. He’s scored 11 goals in 26 games in all competitions this season.

The Manchester native began his career at Manchester United and was a member of the Old Trafford academy before going south when his current club called in 2014.

He spent seven years as a young Reading player before being loaned out to Oxford United, Tranmere Rovers, Shrewsbury Town, and Cambridge United before joining the latter on a permanent basis. Before being welcomed back by the Royals, he had 35 goals in 109 games.
Wrexham may now consider him as someone to bolster their offensive options as they seek to cut the gap on Birmingham. They were defeated 3-2 at home by Stevenage in their most recent match and have already entered the transfer market this month to sign winger Ryan Longman from Hull City.

Wycombe Wanderers dealt blow

Wycombe were linked with a move for Charlton Athletic defender Lloyd Jones this winter. The Chairboys are two points behind the Blues.

However, they will have to hunt elsewhere for backup before the deadline. That’s because the Addicks were able to secure a new contract for Jones.

The 29-year-old has said: “”I’m excited to sign this contract and excited to see what the future holds. I’ve enjoyed my time at Charlton so far, and I feel like I’ve found a real home here. I’m playing the best football of my career under the manager.

“We have a terrific group here who are all very close, and we know exactly what we want to do this season. We believe we’re building something, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

Their manager, Nathan Jones, added: “I’m delighted Lloyd has signed a new deal with us and committed his future to the football club. He’s a fantastic center-back who has found a home here and has been outstanding this season. He’s developed into a true leader and has handled the added responsibilities of vice-captain admirably, so I’m excited to see what he can accomplish at this football club.
