Matt Grimes, Swansea City’s captain, has played his final game for the club and will undergo a medical at Coventry City’s Sky Blue Lodge training facility at 1pm today. The specifics of his move are unknown, although Swansea City Chairman Andrew Coleman is said to have negotiated a sum of as near to four million pounds as feasible, with add-ons.
The departure came as a surprise, but as we revealed yesterday, he had little opportunity of improving his contract at Swansea, where he was already earning around £20,000 per week. Coleman will save a lot of money on his salary alone, but there is a lot of speculation that the monies may go unused in January. To some, it represents the end of an era, with everything bad being interpreted as a personal affront by many. However, Grimes is a commodity, and he will be thirty in four months, so a transaction like this had to happen. Just like Harry Darling, who is attracting a lot of attention and, in turn, is interested in leaving Swansea this month for the proper club. That club is currently Sheffield United, but more will be joining this week.
Matt Grimes has been reported to be overjoyed with his decision, and Dean Austin at the Sky Blues, who handles these recruitment affairs, will be rubbing his hands this morning. Aside from this transfer, the Swans are still in talks with AaB in Denmark for much coveted midfielder Viktor Widell (Melker). The sum is expected to be approximately €3.5 million, and if the Swans are to be taken seriously, they need to sign players like this. Also this morning, we learnt of another player of interest to the Swans. Joel Mvuka has been linked, and he now plays for Lorient in France’s Ligue 2. The Swans have previously shopped in this league. Joel (22) is characterised as a ‘quick’ right-sided player who has three goals in around sixteen games this season. Like Florian Bianchini, he fits the Swans’ profile. Young with potential from a league which the club have shopped in before, plus his salary demands will be quite low.
On the subject of Joe Low he most certainly is of interest still. There was some talk that he is again leaving Wycombe Wanderers last night. For the moment we can put that one to bed, he has been out for a short while with tonsillitis, came back on Saturday but wasn’t fit last night. That’s the current generation.
Finally we have to congratulate Azeem Abdulai on his debut last night for Orient at St James Park, Exeter. He bagged three goals. That’s a great start as Old Father Time starts his judgement on not only him, but those who are in charge of the worst start of the year in living memory for Swansea City.
