Sheffield Wednesday bring in ex-Manchester City figure in important role
An award-winning former Manchester City player has been hired by Sheffield Wednesday to serve as their new head
groundskeeper, according to The Star.
Tim Watt, who departed the team last year, has been sought after by the Owls. The person who will assume the
position is Lee Jackson, who rose through the ranks of the Premier League’s biggest teams for more than 30 years
before becoming Senior Grounds Manager in 2009.
Jackson assisted in the 2003 expansion of the expansive Etihad Campus project and the City’s move from Maine
Road to The Etihad. He oversaw the grounds crew, which won the 2011 Premier League Groundsman Award after
being nominated for multiple others. He is well-liked in the profession and at City, where he was spotted flaunting
the Premier League trophy when we were escorted onto the ground following their championship victory the
previous season.
He began working as an apprentice at City in 1991 and was in charge of the club’s extensive renovation from Maine
Road to the multipurpose stadium that replaced it. During his lengthy tenure, he overcame the difficulties of the
stadium holding concerts and other events, and he hosted a variety of sports, including a Rugby Union World Cup
match in 2015.
Considering that the team has been lacking players since Watt’s departure, it is a crucial recruitment tool. Despite
being the only Championship team to experience pitch problems in recent weeks, Wednesday has come under fire
from opposing managers. Owls manager Danny Röhl expressed his optimism that the field’s recuperation will be
facilitated by the break it receives during the weekend at S6. Wednesday had to train on the Hillsborough pitch,
which has the advantage of under-soil heating, after bad weather at the beginning of the season frozen the Owls’
Middlewood Road training facility.
