In the past, there would be a pub on almost every street corner in every East Lancashire town. They served as gathering spots, community centres, forums for discussing current events, and hangouts for friends.
“A quick one after work” was a common part of many a typical working day, and going “down the pub” was frequently the most popular social activity.
Many of these modest, unpretentious places have closed as a result of changes in licensing regulations and the ensuing shifts in drinking habits.
