Northallerton Riding Club celebrates being named Riding Club of the Year by British Horse Society.
Controversial proposals for a 13-lodge holiday park near Northallerton are poised to be scrapped after councillors were informed that the development has no local support. On Thursday, members of the Thirsk and Malton Area Planning Committee discussed plans for the lodges and a warden’s lodge on a field off Moor Lane in Thornton-le-Beans. Officers had suggested that members approve the design, which, according to the applicant’s agent, would assist nearby stores, cafes, and pubs while not harming the location. However, councillors and opponents of the proposal argued that the development in open countryside violated policy. Geoffrey Davis, chairman of Thornton-le-Beans and Crosby with Cotcliffe Parish Council, stated that there was no evidence of demand for the type of holiday lodges proposed.
He stated, “Within 15 miles of Thornton-le-Beans, there are 40 lodge sites with over 100 luxury units for sale, several within five miles of my plan. The communities do not want or need this development, as seen by the numerous complaints. “We are a closely knit community and do not need any outside assistance to maintain our sustainability.” The meeting heard from resident Paul Higgins, who owns a farm near the proposed holiday camp. He stated, “The negative impact and increased noise and light pollution on our property will be damaging to our physical and mental well-being. “We shall be continually worried about the comings and goings of strangers, campfires and the risk of drunken residents risking the safety of our property and livestock, therefore ruining our way of life.”
