“Exceptional value” – Coventry City surprise issued at £3.5m Swansea City, Matt Grimes reveal
With the asking price set by their Championship opponents and an apparent agreement approaching, Coventry City has been urged to finalize a deal for Swansea City captain Matt Grimes. After replacing Mark Robins at the CBS Arena in November, Frank Lampard is attempting to make the first addition of his Sky Blues career. Rabbi Matondo, a winger for Rangers, was almost signed by the former Derby and Everton head coach, who is also showing interest in bringing Tyrique George on loan from Chelsea. But Grimes appears to be the player closest to finalizing a move to the West Midlands, as Coventry is ready to snatch the seasoned midfield player away.
Matt Grimes of Swansea City is a transfer target for Coventry City.
Grimes, a mainstay at the Swansea.com Stadium for several years, had two different bids from Coventry, according to reports on Monday afternoon. Despite having two offers rejected, Coventry is still optimistic about reaching a deal, and Grimes is rumored to be eager to join the team. However, they have put in a third bid, and a deal is almost final. Grimes, who signed an extension earlier this season but is now very unlikely to see out those terms, is under contract in South Wales until 2027. Swansea has set an asking price of £3.5 million for him, according to the story that FLW broke on Tuesday morning. Grimes has been a vital component of the Swans since their Premier League relegation in 2018, thus Coventry’s win will essentially be their loss.
The 29-year-old has started every game under Luke Williams this season, but it appears like he made his final Swans appearance on Saturday in the team’s humiliating 5-1 loss to Norwich City. He may be on the other team when Coventry hosts the Jack Army this weekend. It does, however, represent an undoubted statement of intent and a clear show of faith in Lampard from chairman Doug King, who is clearly keen to invest where he sees required in a quest to take Coventry into play-off contention and beyond.
Matt Grimes of Swansea City was found guilty by Coventry City, and the asking price was disclosed.
FLW asked Callum Hands, our resident Sky Blues fan commentator, if he thinks Grimes would be worth £3.5 million and if the Swansea mainstay would be able to start for Lampard in the face of competition from players like Ben Sheaf, Josh Eccles, Jamie Allen, and Victor Torp. Callum thinks that Swansea’s asking price is “exceptional value” for Coventry, who he thinks could have one of the best midfield units in the division with Grimes, Sheaf, and cutting-edge midfielder Jack Rudoni. “Obviously Matt Grimes is someone who has been a mainstay at Swansea for a number of years now, and it’s surprising how he hasn’t gone onto better things given how many times he has been linked with a move away,” Callum stated to FLW.
“£3.5 million is exceptional value, especially in a notoriously-inflated transfer window.”Swansea’s decision to let their captain go for such a low price at this point in the season begs the question, but I’m happy that it appears we will benefit because we’ve been clamoring for a replacement for some time.Ben Sheaf has missed a significant portion of the season and hasn’t performed at the level we’ve seen him perform in recent years, even in his cameos. Both Josh Eccles and Jamie Allen, particularly Allen under Lampard in the last few games, have performed admirably in covering the gaps left by Sheaf and even Gus Hamer.
