Sunderland and Leicester City are keen on landing a striker from a Europa League club to bolster their attacking options before the transfer window closes.
The Black Cats pulled off a coup earlier this month when they signed midfielder Enzo Le Fee from Italian powerhouse Roma.
Now, French manager Regis Le Bris needs extra firepower, and Sunderland has been connected with a number of hitmen to fuel a promotion push.
Leicester are also looking for an extra attacking edge to help them avoid relegation from the Premier League, and they’ve identified the same target as Sunderland.
According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the pair are interested in Ajax striker Chuba Akpom, who ‘can go to’ Leicester, Sunderland, or Marseille during the current transfer window.
Akpom has appeared for Ajax in the Europa League this season, scoring once against Qarabag and also facing Besiktas, Slavia Prague, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Real Sociedad, Lazio, and RFS.
The 29-year-old came through Arsenal’s development system and has played for a number of English clubs before moving to Greece with PAOK Salonika.
Middlesbrough brought Akpom back to England before he joined Ajax in 2023.
He has scored 23 goals for the Dutch giants in his time there, but they are willing to let him go.
Akpom has scored eight goals in 31 appearances for Ajax this season.
