‘4 beautiful boys cruelly taken from us by their lying mum’s senseless negligence’

Twins Bryson, Kyson, Logan and Leyton, aged four and three, died in fear and suffering after their mum Deveca Rose left them in a locked house as she went out to Sainsbury’s

The family of four young boys who died in the Sutton house fire after being abandoned by their “lying” mother, Deveca Rose, has spoken of a three-year journey of “lies, delays, and false narrative” surrounding the tragedy. Twins Bryson, Kyson, Logan, and Leyton, aged four and three, perished in dread and misery after Deveca Rose abandoned them in a closed terraced house that caught fire on the evening of December 16, 2021.

Rose, 30, was sentenced for ten years at the Old Bailey, and the children’s paternal family said that justice had been served. Step-grandmother Kerrie Hoath, speaking outside court, said the boys had been “cruelly taken away from us” by their mother’s “senseless act of negligence”.

She stated of Rose, “The disregard she showed towards our boys has been echoed throughout this entire trial, as our family has had to endure three years of lies, delays, and false narratives.” This time has been a nightmare, and the impact on our family cannot be exaggerated. We’ve heard that the fire was started by lights on a Christmas tree, and that the boys were left with a babysitter, which is inaccurate. We appreciate the jury’s ability to see beyond that and render a true verdict.

“Bryson, Kyson, Logan, and Leyton were left alone by their mother, Deveca Rose. She was found to be guilty for their deaths.

She described the boys as “beautiful, loving children” who did not deserve what occurred, adding that the influence they had on us in their short lives was immeasurable and would never be forgotten. We miss them every day and will always have them in our hearts. While there will be brighter days ahead, the void created by our children’s deaths cannot be replaced.
Rose wailed in the dock, her hooded head buried in her arms, as more members of the boys’ families shared their grief during the sentencing hearing. Dalton Hoath, the boys’ father, told the court that the day he lost his sons was “the worst day of my life” in a statement.

He stated, “Their lives had barely begun but were cut short. It was every parent’s nightmare. I’m devastated. I can’t express how horrific that was. To be called to a house fire, told your sons are inside, and then have to see their small bodies at the hospital, terrified to touch them because they were so frail.

“Then, with some optimism for my other two sons, Kyson and Bryson, who were still fighting. Another pain in the heart after they were gone. I’m not a great talker, and even if I were, I couldn’t put it into words. “I just wanted to join them.”

Mr Hoath stated that he had suffered every minute since loosing the sons and had gone to some “very dark places”. He continued: “It’s been a difficult three years, thinking that everyone had forgotten about my boys. I couldn’t always cope.

“Thanks to my family’s support, I’ve made it thus far.I’ve tried to be normal for my own family; I have two amusing, fantastic sons and a lovely young girl with my partner. I now live for them.

“My future is not what it should be today, and it never will be. I’ll never heal from the loss of my gorgeous, hilarious, and happy boys. The awful emotions and images are carved in my mind, but I must fight for all of us who have been left behind and bear this immense agony in my heart until the time comes for me to see them again. It has never been more vital to cherish every moment with your children, since I now understand that disasters can occur.”

Jason Hoath, the children’s grandfather, stated that he was and still is “broken”. He told the court, “That traumatic night will stay with me for the rest of my life, as it has for nearly three years.”

“Seeing that house in flames and knowing there were four tiny ones inside waiting to be saved was too difficult to convey. I was at the hospital, hoping Kyson and Bryson would make it, only to be saddened again as they slipped away after fighting so bravely.”

Sally Johnson, great-grandmother, stated that the “horror and pain” stayed with her after her world was “shattered into tiny pieces”. She described their laughing, grins, and the way they would all hug me and say, ‘We love you, Nanny Sally. “These things are not easily forgotten.”The thought of kids wailing and screaming for rescue will stay with me forever. Even though they were united, they must have felt terrified and worried. My only solace in this time of sorrow and sadness is that they are now together forever and will never be alone again.”

She continued, “I’m scared I’ll never be able to forgive on behalf of my children. I’ll only utter their favorite word. Why?”
