The Murderers in Norwich celebrates its history in new sign

A new sign for one of Norwich’s oldest pubs depicts two well-known faces and pays homage to its colourful past.

Although most people refer to it as The Murderers, the Gardeners Arms, Timber Hill’s most well-liked drinking

establishment, has been a pub since at least 1841.

When Millie Miles, the daughter of landlady Maria Wilby and her estranged husband, Frank Miles, a former soldier,

killed her in 1895, it gained its notorious moniker.

He was sentenced to death by hanging, but this was commuted to a prison term after 10,000 people in Norwich

signed a petition.

The new sign at the front of the pub, painted by local artist Darren Smith, nods to its two names, with The Murderers

side depicting the bloody event of 1895.

The 52-year-old pub landlord Phil Cutter is portrayed as Cain, the son of Adam and Eve, in the Gardeners Arms side,

which honours tradition with a twist.

The 53-year-old landlady and his wife, Sherie Cutter, is depicted as the Greek goddess of agriculture and the harvest,

Demeter.

Mr. Cutter stated: “When the pub grew in size in 1977, Douro Potter and Ray Lince, the landlords, petitioned the

council to rename it The Murderers.

“However, this was refused as the council wanted to keep the traditional name.

“The pair had the idea to have a sign with the Gardeners Arms on one side and The Murderers on the other and that

tradition has continued over the years.”

Two and a half years after the former sign was destroyed by a bomb in May 2021 and taken down because it was

damaged, a new one has finally been installed.

Mr. Cutter continued: “The reaction to the new sign has been amazing, when it was installed on Wednesday we had

at least 50 people stop outside to take pictures.”

A plaque next to the original 1977 sign has also been placed up inside the tavern.
