Newcastle United receives a new Joelinton referee’s ruling, as the truth about punishment surfaces.

Joelinton was fortunate to escape punishment for a late tackle during Newcastle’s 3-1 victory over Southampton in Premier League action, according to Newcastle.

After the shocking loss at home to Bournemouth, the Magpies resumed their winning ways over the weekend with to goals from Sandro Tonali and Alexander Isak (two).

With those three points, Eddie Howe’s team returned to the top five, and Isak’s season total now stands at 19 across all competitions. Isak promptly responded with a brace in four minutes after Jan Bednarek put the Saints ahead, and Tonali added a third shortly after halftime.

In an attempt to keep hold of possession, the Brazilian midfielder caught Paul Onuachu very late on the ankle and while a foul was given, no caution was dished out by Sam Barrott. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher was asked about the incident and subsequently offered a clear verdict.

“I got lucky,” he stated on Sky Sports Ref Watch. I was fortunate. He goes through and catches him on the ankle just above the boot, and I believe he receives a yellow card. Short distance; a yellow card and a free kick would have been appropriate. Joelinton would have gone up to nine for the season if he had received a warning.

If the 28-year-old receives those bookings within the next 15 games, Howe would certainly have to deal with his absence for two games, since he tends to be involved in everything. He has excelled in a midfield trio with Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, so his absence will be a setback.

Fortunately for the Magpies, he was not disciplined on Saturday and says it was deserving of a red card, since Gallagher also appeared to dismiss him.
