Exclusive: Swansea City set Matt Grimes transfer demand as Coventry City push to seal deal

Swansea City are demanding £3.5m from Coventry City for the services of Matt Grimes, Football League World can exclusively reveal.

BBC Sport revealed on Monday that the Sky Blues were interested in signing the Swans midfielder and had already had two bids rejected, but FLW can now tell that Frank Lampard’s team will have to pay £3.5 million to get his services.

The Sky Blues are interested in signing Grimes, but the Swans’ asking price underlines their desire to either keep their key player or cash in on a large transfer fee for a player whose contract expires in 2027.

Meanwhile, Coventry have made no signings since the appointment of new manager Lampard in November, and club owner Doug King will be eager to back the former England player in the transfer market following the dramatic dismissal of popular manager Mark Robins.

Furthermore, the West Midlands club is only six points behind the play-off places, having won three straight games against fellow top-six contenders Bristol City, Blackburn Rovers, and Watford.

Grimes’ ability to influence play in a Swans shirt suggests that he would be a great asset for Lampard’s side as they pursue the play-offs.

Meanwhile, the Swans face the Sky Blues in their next Championship encounter on Saturday, although current club captain Grimes might play for the opposition if King agrees to pay the £3.5 million fee.

Grimes would be a big loss for Swansea

While the Englishman could be a great addition to the Sky Blues, he would also be a huge loss for the South Wales side, who may need him more than ever.

Appearances 29
Starts 29
Tackles won % 54.2
Duels won % 57.4

The Swans are now seven points above the relegation zone and have not won since beating current bottom-three side Luton Town on December 29th.

Grimes has been a key player for Swansea since returning from a loan spell with Northampton Town in 2018, and it would be a bad moment for manager Luke Williams to lose his captain, especially with less than a week left in the transfer window.
