Exclusive: PGMOL must outlaw ‘serious’ Gomes challenge after Wolves vs Arsenal.
Keith Hackett believes PGMOL should classify fouls like Wolves’ Joao Gomes’ red card challenge on Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber as “serious foul play.”
Former PGMOL chairman, ex-FIFA, and Premier League referee says tackles should be “outlawed” (exclusive to Football Insider).
The challenge came in the 70th minute and leveled the playing field after Michael Oliver had sent off Myles Lewis-Skelly in an earlier incident.
Hackett’s “wrong” action caused debate, but Gomes’ position was completely different.
His foot was placed on Timber’s lower Achilles, but fortunately, the Dutch defender was able to continue playing for the remainder of the game.
Keith Hackett feels Wolves players were irresponsible in their challenge.
Despite receiving a yellow card early in the game, Vitor Pereira kept the Brazilian on the field, and he was subsequently sent off for his high tackle on Timber.
However, he received a yellow card rather than a straight red, which means he will only miss one game for the team, against Aston Villa on February 1.
Unlike Lewis-Skelly, who will miss three consecutive games, including meetings against Manchester City and Newcastle.
Hackett criticized Gomes’ violation and advocated for outlawing such challenges, as reported by Football Insider. A risky challenge earns at least a yellow card.
“I would suggest that the PGMOL should start to interpret these lower-leg Achilles challenges as serious foul play.”
Despite the difficulty, Mikel Arteta’s squad triumphed when substitute Riccardo Calafiori scored in the 74th minute.
Pereira’s squad is now 17th in the table, just ahead of the relegation zone and Ipswich Town on goal difference. They may thank Matheus Cunha for their goals, despite being widely linked with a transfer to rival Arsenal.
