A Drunk driver jailed after killing pub landlady

A drunk driver has been imprisoned for over six years after hitting and killing a pedestrian. On the evening of December 10, 2022, Jacob James King drove into Teresa Grimes, the proprietor of a pub, on Southampton’s West End High Street. King, 29, of Chessel Avenue, Southampton, was found guilty by Southampton Crown Court of exceeding the legal drinking and driving limit while operating his silver BMW. He pleaded guilty to causing death by unsafe driving and was sentenced to six years and eight months in jail. 

According to the court, King was watching England play France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal while sipping beer and rum at a friend’s house. Later, he got behind the wheel of his vehicle, and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary released CCTV footage from the evening that showed him traveling between 66 and 72 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone. Teresa Grimes had just left her job at the West End Brewery bar, the court heard.

Prior to the deadly collision, the 53-year-old was crossing the High Street for takeaway. “Getting behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated remains truly a selfish act,” Ms. Grimes’ family stated after she was sentenced.the consequences of losing a loved one and the complete destruction it brings to families. “The punishment needs to be harsh for these crimes, people shouldn’t look lightly on drink driving.”What occurred 600 days ago is unaffected by the events of today.
