Michael Carrick has not ruled out any further Middlesbrough departures in the last week of the January transfer window, following Micah Hamilton’s loan move to Stockport County.
Last week, the Teessiders brought Ryan Giles and Morgan Whittaker to the Riverside, while also sealed a permanent transfer for Ipswich Town defender George Edmundson, who had been momentarily returned to Portman Road. It means there is more competition for places in the Boro team, which is obviously good news for Carrick.
However, it may result in fewer opportunities for some of the squad’s fringe players, who will face decisions about their futures in the coming days. Alex Gilbert and Matt Clarke have been linked with moves abroad, either on loan or permanently, with Derby County interested in experienced defender Clarke.
Boro approved Hamilton’s loan move that week, and the former Manchester City forward is now hoping to get lots of games under his belt in League One as Stockport competes for promotion to the Championship.
“It was just to get him a good run of games,” Carrick said about Hamilton’s extension. “He might have stayed here, and we were considering it at one point, as well as being here and in the vicinity. But then circumstances changed a little, and we decided it was best for him to go play and do well, and ideally come back stronger for us at the conclusion of the season.
Carrick was understandably wary about discussing other potential options. The window expires at 11 p.m. on Monday, February 3, so the clock is ticking for any additional discounts.
“This week is what it is,” he explained.”There are several decisions to be made. We will have to wait and see.
“It’s impossible to tell about people at this point in the season. There’s a lot to go through this week, and there are a few guys we need to think about and figure out what’s best for us and them. “We’ll see how things go.”
