15-goal hotshot linked with Sheffield United, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday nears transfer move with ‘medical underway’
Louie Barry, the 15-goal hotshot phenom who was on Sheffield United’s and Wednesday’s radars earlier this month, is on the verge of joining one of their local rivals in the Championship. The 21-year-old Aston Villa loanee stormed into the scene with a goal-laden first half of the current season at Stockport County.
With the Blades looking for a left winger who could also play up front, Barry was an obvious choice, but half of the second division, including promotion rivals Leeds United and city neighbours Wednesday, were also interested in him. The Blades’ interest ceased when they signed former loan player Ben Brereton Diaz, and Barry is now expected to join Championship rivals Hull City.
According to reports from Humberside, Barry is receiving a physical before making the transition for the second half of the season. If that happens, United will avoid facing their previous objective, given they have already played the Tigers twice this season. However, Ruben Selles’ side still has to face the Blades’ promotion rivals Burnley and Sunderland before the season ends, in addition to Wednesday.
Barry spent ten years with West Brom as a youth before making waves with an eye-catching transfer to Barcelona in 2019. He moved to Villa for an initial fee of around £900,000 and signed a new contract in the summer of 2023 before joining Stockport for the first of two loan periods.
After deciding to recall him to Villa Park, manager Unai Emery stated: “He trained with us, and we are going to make a plan with him, an overall plan.” I believe he is a really excellent player who is developing well. He has performed admirably while on loan. Now we can make a fresh plan with him. He improved because he scored so many goals on loan. He trained with us only today and yesterday. Of course, we will strive to work out a good plan for the club with him.”
