Cardiff’s Meite hits back at fan ‘abuse’

Cardiff’s Meite hits back at fan ‘abuse.’

Cardiff City striker Yakou Meite says he has stopped applauding the club’s supporters after matches due to “abuse” he has received from some fans.

In a letter posted on social media, the 28-year-old striker addresses messages he has received, some of which he

claims have nothing to do with football.

Since joining the Bluebirds in July 2023, the Ivory Coast international has made 63 appearances and scored three

goals.

My post on X said: “Hello everyone. After a challenging few weeks during which I read and received numerous

insulting remarks about me from our own supporters, some of whom are undoubtedly not football enthusiasts, I just

wanted to voice my opinions.

“I am someone who usually likes to stop at every game, clap the fans and have a good connexion (sic) with them, but

after all the abuse I received this past few weeks I decided to stop doing it and I’m REALLY sorry for those people

who are still supporting me and trusting me.”

Meite’s retaliation against critical Cardiff supporters is not new.

He raised his fingers to his lips in celebration of his goal against Coventry in November, seemingly in an attempt to

taunt social media critics.

This season, he has only scored once, in the 2-2 draw at the CBS Arena.

In his latest post Meite added: “Honestly at some point, it’s difficult to know who is with you or against. We are all

human and you guys should also understand this can hurt people and change them.

“I will always give the club my all until the very end, but I will never accept being the issue if something goes wrong.

I’m not your concern, therefore let’s concentrate on our goal together.”

Omer Riza, the manager of Cardiff, has also defended his player on social media:

“No matter how he plays or performs at times, one thing from Yak is that he always does things fully and

wholeheartedly,” Riza wrote on Twitter.

He puts a lot of effort into his training and shows concern for the group around him. It’s not only football; I’m a

perfect example of how difficult it can be to control your emotions at times.
