Brits agree with Taylor Swift over best cat breed

Taylor has two of them, called Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson

Brits have named the Scottish Fold as the ‘top cat’ in a new study by Burns Pet Nutrition. The little-eared cats topped

a poll of pet owners who said they were the most intelligent (75%), most affectionate (67%) and the easiest to train

(92%) compared with other breeds.

The Scottish Fold has risen in popularity in recent years with popstar Taylor Swift owning a pair called Meredith

Grey and Olivia Benson and Ed Sheeran owning one called Calippo. The number of Scottish Folds sold in the UK

soared to 110,000 in 2021, in part down to them being the prized possession of social media-loving celebrities.

Ragdoll cats, known for their love of being held and cuddled, were a close second with 56% of Brits saying they were

the most affectionate, ahead of Maine Coons at 46%.

More than half (56%) of Brits said Ragdolls had the biggest personalities, with the 46% choosing Maine Coons and

41% preferring Bengals. The survey of 2,041 pet owners has also broken down the results by colour and found that

calico cats are the easiest to train.

Eight in 10 owners of the three-coloured cats say they respond to instructions the best, and half (50%) saying they

are incredibly affectionate. One in four (25%) tabby owners claim their pet is more cuddly than other coloured cats,

while 85% say they are the easiest to train.

Nutrition Manager at Burns Pet Nutrition, Laura Crotch Harvey said: “All cat breeds are often unfairly lumped in

together as one. But like dogs, cats have very different personalities and needs, from grooming, stimulation, exercise,

and nutrition.

“It’s clear, those looking for that perfect companion should investigate the different breeds properly to ensure they’re

picking the cat that best suits them and their lifestyle.”
