Best Southampton pubs for a quiet pint according to locals
There are many pubs in Southampton’s downtown that may accommodate different demands, some of which prefer
a more subdued setting.
For some people, the idea of spending an afternoon or evening reading a book while sipping a pint and listening to
minimal background noise is ideal.
There are several possibilities available to you if you’re searching for that experience at a pub close to the city core.
With the headline, “Best quiet pint in and around the city centre?” a post on the r/Southampton Reddit forum
started a discussion on the subject.
They added: “I’ve got a completely free day and am currently enjoying a coffee in town. Given that I’ve got nothing to
do, I might grab a pint in a few hours. Where’s your favourite place to enjoy a quiet pint?”

Locals left a few recommendations beneath the piece, some of which were mentioned a few times.
One of those was The Guide Dog on Earls Road, which one visitor commented: “The best “peaceful” pub in Bevois
Valley, in my opinion, is The Guide Dog.” I enjoy nursing a pint while reading a book.
“The Titanic pub is pretty quiet too,” said another, adding it to their list of suggestions. The Guide Dog up Bevois
Valley is my favourite. Excellent choice of real ale.
A few people also mentioned the Stein Garten on the High Street, with one commenting: “I personally enjoy the
steingarten, there are a lot of curry restaurants and a good steakhouse next door.”
One of the more historic Southampton pubs in The Red Lion was also mentioned, with a couple commending it.
One person said, “I’m quite fond of the Red Lion towards the bottom of town, historic, reasonable prices and usually pretty quiet,” in a very positive recommendation.
Another said, “+1 for the red lion, also has a great vibe due to the history and character of the building, imo,”
expressing how much they liked the ambiance inside.
Bottle & Stoat and Boards & Beards, two pubs on Bedford Place that are extremely near to one another, were also
chosen as finalists.
There was a bit of debate on whether the Dancing Man Brewery fell into the category of a good city centre
establishment for a quiet pint.
Someone brought it up and said: “Dancing Man, or if you fancy a short walk over the bridge Olaf’s Tun in Woolston
(the latter run by the same people as Bottle and Stoat).”
Its “excellent beer” was another argument in favour of this viewpoint, but not everyone shared it.
It had a “nice atmosphere” but wasn’t quiet, according to one respondent.
In the meantime, someone else said: “I agree. “A beautiful location, but definitely not the place for a ‘quiet’ pint.”
