West Brom’s club record transfer and whether Shilen Patel could break that in January
West Brom has invested large sums of money in players over the years in order to maintain their competitiveness at
the highest levels of English football.
The Baggies used the money to bring some quality football players to The Hawthorns during their successful eight-
year Premier League run from 2010 to 2018.
Football League World examines West Brom’s club record transfer and whether Shilen Patel could break it during
the remaining January transfer window. Even though Albion has dropped back to the Championship, new
controlling shareholder Shilen Patel has given West Brom supporters hope that a significant amount of investment
will be injected back into the club to get them fighting back in the top flight. The Florida-based businessman will
have to wait before splashing the cash because of the club’s current financial pressure, but eventually the Albion
coaching staff should be backed to build a team to stop their exodus from the Premier League.
West Brom’s club record signing
Salomon Rondon, a former forward who joined Albion in 2015 for an estimated €17 million (£14.7 million) from
Zenit St. Petersburg, is West Brom’s club record acquisition, according to Transfermarkt.
The Venezuelan international led the Black Country’s line for three seasons and would go on to make 108 Premier
League matches.
With his enormous stature and physicality, Rondon was a force up front. In his first season, he scored nine goals and
adapted to life in the top flight with ease, helping the Baggies finish in 14th place under Tony Pulis.
Rondon’s seven goals in his final season were insufficient to keep the Baggies from being relegated back to the
Championship, but the now 35-year-old would score eight goals the following season as Albion surged into the top
half of the Premier League standings.
From 108 appearances in the top level, Rondon scored 24 goals and provided seven assists overall.
At the time, the hefty transfer fee spent on the frontman was worth every penny, with Rondon playing a key role to
Albion’s stay in the Premier League, while supplying a consistent number of goals to help the Baggies compete
among England’s elite sides.
Could Shilen Patel break the figure in January?
Albion’s return to the Premier League this season would hasten the process, but it will take time before Patel can
But given that Albion is currently in the second division and there have been numerous stories of their financial
difficulties, it would be incredible if Patel were to surpass their current record transfer total in January.
With the enormous amount of money they received for promotion out of the Championship, the club could only
afford to spend that much money again if they were a Premier League team.
