Rangers strive to ‘avoid another liquidation event’ at Ibrox after £5m bid.
According to Gary Keown, Rangers are more concerned with avoiding collapse than with winning trophies, notwithstanding Jack Butland’s rejection of a move to Nottingham Forest.
Last year, the Englishman disclosed that he had turned down a move to the Premier League club, calling it a “straight no” to the Reds [Football Scotland]. It is uncertain whether the 31-year-old would regret his decision, but following a difficult period at Ibrox in recent months, Keown has assumed that this is the case. The columnist, writing for the Scottish Mail on Sunday on January 26 (page 94), indicated that the Gers’ goal of simply avoiding another liquidation may annoy the goalie. He stated, “Butland must question his own prudence in saying ‘no’ to Forest through his agent. Back then, he mentioned that there was so much more for him to accomplish in Glasgow.”If only he knew then what he knows now: there is no money in the coffers, and his manager is telling the world that this is a long-term project about developing young players and avoiding another liquidation event rather than winning actual championships. “Not exactly what a soon-to-be 32-year-old who recently held hopes of an England recall requires.”
Rangers focus on finances rather than trophies
Despite a poor performance against Manchester United, the English shot-stopper is one of Philippe Clement’s best players. Since joining from Crystal Palace, there has been a lot of interest in his signature, but no transfer has been completed because Butland chose to stay in Govan. It would be interesting to know if the former Stoke City ace was aware of the intentions in the Ibrox boardroom before turning down the move. Given his age and links to the Premier League and the England national team, the Gers’ number one will want to do as much as possible before retiring.
That may not be doable with the Light Blues right now, as Patrick Stewart looks to calm the ship and move forward cautiously. Although this may cause difficulties for Clement or whoever succeeds him in the next months and years, it could be a good decision in the long run.
