Matchday Memories: On This Day 1993 – Watch Bobby’s Boys Blitz Blackburn’s Bubble At Ewood
On this day (26th January) in 1993 former Sky Blue player and now gaffer Bobby Gould took his Sky Blues to Ewood Park, Blackburn on a cold, wet evening.
A Blackburn Rovers win would have sent them top of the Premier League and pundits expected the City to offer little resistance to this objective. The Rovers had already inflicted a 2-0 defeat on the Sky Blues at Highfield Road back in August.
But Bobby’s Boys put on the best show of the season, defeating the League’s top scorers 5-2 with a “Blitz of Blackburn” in the second half!
The fact that Alan Shearer, Blackburn’s sixteenth goal, was sidelined due to injury gave the City one edge, but they were also without Stewart Robson and Kevin Gallacher, both of whom are currently members of the Association.
Roy Wegerle, a future Sky Blue, played for the Rovers.
In response, the team struck the Rovers for “The Old Five” on this particular day.
Following a twenty-minute own goal from a future Sky Blue, CCFPA members Lee Hurst (45 minutes) scored a 35-yarder, John Williams (48 minutes), and Mick Quinn (85 & 88 minutes) scored late goals for the Sky Blues.
It all began with Colin Hendry! The Rovers scored goals in the Sky Blues’ 5-2 victory thanks to goals from Mike Newell (thirteen minutes) and Colin Hendry (72 minutes), who made apologies.
Given that both sides were vying for the top spot in the table and that the Sky Blues’ victory moved them up to fifth place in the Premier League standings, the 15,215 fans at Ewood Park must have been taken aback by how easily they won. Admittedly, the home team appeared to have the best chance of scoring at 3-2.
But once Micky Quinn got involved, the outcome was certain! By clicking on the image or link below, you can view the game’s highlights, provided by Dean Nelson, a former committee member of the CCFPA:-
The City team that night was:-
Steve Ogrizovic, Brian Borrows, Phil Babb, Peter Atherton, David Busst, John Williams, Peter Ndlovu, Micky Gynn, Robert Rosario, Micky Quinn, and Lee Hurst are the only members of this team who have not yet joined the Association.
Meanwhile, Kenny Dalglish’s Rovers team consisted of Bobby Mimms, David May, Alan Wright (sub. Mark Atkins -47), Tim Sherwood, Colin Hendry, Nicky Marker, Stuart Ripley, and Gordon Cowans.
By the end of the 1992-93 Premier League season Blackburn Rovers had kept their top six place (finishing fifth) whilst the Sky Blues slipped to record a fifteenth place finish only three points better off than relegated club Crystal Palace.
Middlesbrough and bottom club Nottingham Forest also went down as Manchester United took the title ten points ahead of CCFC’s most local rivals Aston Villa.
