Myles Lewis-Skelly, 18, became the third youngest player to be sent off in Premier League history when he was given a straight red card by Michael Oliver in the first half of Arsenal’s 1-0 victory at Wolves for taking down Matt Doherty in his own half.
The body in charge of officiating professional games in England has condemned “abhorrent attacks” directed at Oliver after he made the decision to dismiss Lewis-Skelly. Spectators were shocked by the decision, with Alan Shearer calling it “one of the worst decisions that I’ve seen in a long time.”
In the first half of Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Wolves, Lewis-Skelly, 18, was shown a straight red card by Oliver for pulling down Matt Doherty in his own half, making him the third youngest player to be sent off in Premier League history.
Pundits were shocked by the decision on Saturday, with Alan Shearer describing it as “one of the worst decisions that I’ve seen in a long time.”
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited issued the following statement on Sunday: “We are horrified by the vitriol and threats that were directed at Michael Oliver after the Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Arsenal match.
“No official should endure abuse of any kind, much less the heinous assaults that have been directed at Michael and his family in the last twenty-four hours.”Numerous investigations have begun, and the police are aware.
We are committed to addressing this inappropriate behavior and stand by Michael and everyone impacted.
Unfortunately, threats against match officials have happened before in recent years.
“We will remain supportive of all investigations.”
In the same way that Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was released after receiving a red card against Tottenham earlier in the season, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta declared he was “fuming” right after the game and refused to comment on the ruling. He wants it overturned.
As Arteta stated, “I hope we don’t have to [appeal], but if we do, there is a really good precedent, what happened with Bruno this season as well.”
