Suffolk firefighters battle 2-alarm trash fire at landfill
Firefighters established a water supply at the base of the landfill and shuttled water to the top of a hill, where about one acre of debris was on fire.
SUFFOLK, Va. — Firefighters in Suffolk battled a 2-alarm blaze at the Regional Landfill on Thursday morning.
The call for the fire came in around 5 a.m. off of Bob Foeller Drive. Fire Chief Mike Barakey tells 13News Now crews are working to put water on the fire at the top of a trash pile, located in a remote area of the landfill.
In a social media post, Suffolk Fire and Rescue said the fire is “deep-seated and operations are complicated due to the wind and shuttling water up the hill.” Officials said firefighters established a water supply at the base of the landfill and shuttled water to the top, where about one acre of debris was on fire.
The fire was marked under control shortly after 8 a.m. Firefighters continue to monitor the scene, and while no structures were impacted, residual smoke can be expected to be seen for several hours in the area of Route 58 near the Downtown Suffolk exit. Officials said there is no threat to the public.
No one was hurt battling the fire, which saw 45 firefighters work the incident.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
