Reading FC boss on off-field updates, January moves and HMRC.
Reading manager Noel Hunt has said that the club has yet to receive any bids from players looking to move in January as the transfer season closes. Fears were high among both inside and outside the club, with supporters concerned about another fire sale to fund the club in the short term. This follows the events of last January, when first-team players were sold, some without the approval of manager Ruben Selles. However, as the deadline of 11 p.m. on Monday, February 3, approaches, news for the Royals stays quiet and optimistic.
“We’ve had no phone calls. I spoke to Bri yesterday and nothing has changed,” Hunt told the media ahead of Saturday’s trip to Leyton Orient. “It is relatively quiet on that front, which is great for us. There is 11 days left so we are counting them down. The boys have been brilliant. They work so well together, and I think they know we have a good thing here. When we get these lads up and running and fully fit to help the squad and the whole group, it is nothing but a plus.
“You can never say never because we learnt that last year, but as far as I know, Gilksey and Bri have been left with the task at hand, and it is critical that we stay on that page and keep everyone here as best we can. It is extremely significant for the football club, the fans, and everyone. We have wonderful men in the locker room with great personalities, and we don’t want to lose anyone. The first of two monthly expenses that the club has previously failed to pay on time is tax. After causing problems for the team last season, supporters are now acutely aware of deadlines and concerned about urgent financing. However, Hunt was quick to assure supporters that this is in hand.
“If I showed you my phone, you’d see that I’ve blocked every media outlet on my Twitter account. I couldn’t tell you unless I had a phone call from Brian [Carey] or Gilkesy. I haven’t had any chats about the off-field stuff. “It’s been paid. That has been the case for however many months. It is talked about, but nothing has changed; it was paid yesterday, and we are still moving forward.”
