Rangers to accept Tavernier and Dessers offers ? Keith Wyness’ instant verdict.
According to former Aberdeen manager Keith Wyness, Rangers are unlikely to sell senior duo James Tavernier and Cyriel Dessers this summer.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old, who served as CEO of Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa, and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, insisted the Ibrox club had “missed the opportunity” to get maximum value for Tavernier, while Dessers is now “flavour of the month” for the Gers. Rangers fans have singled out both players for criticism, as Philippe Clement’s side trails Celtic by 13 points in the Scottish Premiership title race.
Dessers has been linked with a potential return to Italy with Cagliari, while Tavernier has long been targeted by Turkish and Saudi Pro League sides as he enters his twilight years.
The duo impressed for a youthful Rangers side as they went down 2-1 in stoppage time against Man United on Thursday (23 January).
Tavernier and Dessers set to stay at Rangers until the summer, says Wyness
Wyness conceded the Gers need a “younger nucleus,” but assured both players will stay at Ibrox until the summer window. He told Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “They’re in Europe with important games coming up. “They undoubtedly squandered the opportunity to capitalise on Tavernier.”
“With Dessers, he’s become the flavour of the month again after squandering several major opportunities in recent weeks. “It’s probably preferable to cash in at some point, but probably not until the summer. “It all relies on the quality of the talent they can bring in and how they rebuild. “There is no doubt that recruitment and the young academy raise serious concerns.
