Norwich clamping: 200 untaxed vehicles caught in a week
During a blitz in the city, more than 200 untaxed cars have been clamped in and around Norwich in only one week.
Owners have 24 hours to pay £100 to NSL, the DVLA’s clamping partner, in order to have the car released, failing
which it would be seized and maybe destroyed.
According to Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com, more individuals are failing to renew their vehicle
taxes since they went online.
The DVLA said its partner clamped 210 untaxed vehicles since 13 August.
Since 2014, when it was about 60,000, the number of people punished nationwide for not having a car tax has
increased annually, according to Ms. Stretton, reaching 92,000 in 2017.
“DVLA operates a range of measures to make vehicle tax easy to pay and hard to avoid, including online vehicle
taxing and Direct Debit,” a statement from the agency stated.
It is crucial that car keepers tell the DVLA of any changes to their residence or keeper since we also maintain sending
them reminder letters.
The car’s official keeper is required to pay a £100 release charge and an additional £160 surety if they are unable to
prove the vehicle has been taxed.
“The surety fee is refunded if the motorist is able to show that the vehicle has been taxed within 15 days of its
release,” said the statement.
“We will impound the car if the release fee is not paid.
“The release fee will then rise to £200 and there will be a storage charge of £21 per day.”
