New plan to create 5,000 jobs in Salford that could pump millions into city

Regeneration plans in Salford are set to pump millions of pounds into the city and create thousands of new jobs.

Salford City Council, Trafford Council, and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) are discussing the creation of a new mayoral development zone to spur new development in the region’s western gateway.

The decision will help Salford significantly, with the council anticipating that it will create more than 5,000 jobs and deliver a £6.4 million financial injection through business rates.
The plans would produce up to 511,000 square metres of new job space, including land at the council-owned Salford Community Stadium in Eccles near the M60.

Separately, Trafford Council is considering establishing a mayoral development corporation for Old Trafford and Trafford Wharfside, with the possibility of rebuilding Manchester United’s football stadium in the future.
A crucial component of the western gateway is the usage of Port Salford, a vast distribution facility in the city that can be accessed by ship, road, and rail and has the capacity for five million square feet of logistical floor space.

However, Salford Council stated that’significant highway and rail infrastructure’ investment is required to move the plans forward.

This could include new road infrastructure for Port Salford and Trafford Waters, increased rail capacity at Port Salford, improved transport connections to Eccles town centre, and changes to the larger road network.
The town hall expects that establishing a new development zone in collaboration with Trafford Council and the GMCA will coordinate the investment and planning required to move forward, which will be overseen by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.

Salford Council’s cabinet team is expected to approve the change at its next meeting on Tuesday, January 28. Salford council was approached for comment.
