Forest legend shows support for charity
John McGovern, the former captain of Nottingham Forest, has promised to continue supporting the Guide Dogs for
the Blind charity even after assuming his new position as the club’s Ambassador for Sport.
Three years ago, the Reds icon and blind Bulwell man Dave Martin formed a connection that has since grown, and
the two have collaborated extensively to collect money for the cause.
The latest charity event took place at the newly refurbished White Lion pub in Swingate.
McGovern, who led Forest to two victories in the 1970s European Cup final, took centre stage at the Kimberley
hostelry and enthralled a packed house of over sixty people with his “Audience With McGovern” segment, when he
reminisced about the Reds’ biggest victories.
Speaking after the event Dave said: “This event was a triumph of teamwork.
“My daughter and her husband, who run the White Lion, have put in a lot of effort to make sure it’s successful, and
John McGovern was a class act as our special guest.
“I want to express my gratitude to everyone who came; it has been a very motivating event.
As someone who has been blind for a good number of years, I am grateful for what the Guide Dogs for the Blind
charity does to aid those in similar situations by providing them with the support, assistance, and direction they need
to overcome hardship.
