Due to storm damage at Celtic Park, Celtic’s Scottish Premiership match against Dundee has been postponed.
This means that Brendan Rodgers’ team will take a long break before Wednesday night’s Champions League match against Aston Villa. In the meantime, Villa will play West Ham at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Before playing Villa on Wednesday night, Celtic will have played their final game seven days ago, and Emery’s team will have three days off. For Villa to have the best chance of placing in the top eight of the league phase table, they must win the match.
If Villa defeats Celtic and one of Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Atalanta, or Bayer Leverkusen loses their remaining league games, they will automatically qualify for the Champions League round of 16.
If Villa improves the German team’s victory margin over Sparta Praha by two goals or more, they may also finish ahead of Leverkusen. If Villa loses to Monaco, they might possibly catch fourth-place Inter. However, if they were to defeat Villa by two more goals, they would be the Ligue 1 team that would replace Inter in the top eight.
Following the unrest at Old Trafford on Thursday when Rangers supporters were able to purchase home tickets for the Europa League match against Manchester United, West Midlands Police have advised Villa supporters to use restraint if Celtic supporters are discovered in the home ends on Wednesday night.
“If there are away supporters in home areas of the stadium on Wednesday evening, do not react with aggression or violence,” they wrote on their dedicated X account. Please let Aston Villa employees handle the situation, or the police if necessary. Aston Villa has made a concerted effort to stop this from occurring.
