Muddy Stilettos has put together its annual list of the ‘Top 260 Best Places To Live’

The Isle of Wight and Hampshire have been selected as the top places to live in 2024. The ‘Top 260 Best Places To

Live’ list, which Muddy Stilettos compiles every year, features ten locales in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Unsurprisingly, Winchester, which was chosen the greatest location to live in 2023, makes the cut once more. Since

Lymington lost the title the year before, they are also included.

However, readers may not be all too familiar with some of the other locations. We have listed each below, with

details about what makes them so great according to Muddy Stilettos

Overton

The quaint North Hampshire village of Overton, a well-kept secret nestled close to the River Test’s source, boasts

excellent connections (though they don’t like to brag about them) and even a Jane Austen connection: Hampshire’s

First Daughter was born in the nearby village of Steventon.

The town centre is a lovely patchwork of antique homes, including thatched cottages, bijou terraces, leaning timber-

framed homes from the 17th century, and more recent, modern construction. You get a lot more property for your

money here than you may think, especially considering how easy it is to go to London by train.

Bishop’s Waltham

The historic, mediaeval market town of Bishop’s Waltham, which is located on the outskirts of the South Downs

National Park and is 12 miles southeast of Winchester and 11 miles northeast of Southampton, gained its name

shortly after 904 when the King transferred the manor to the Bishop of Winchester. Locals value the historic

shopping, excellent schools, sense of community, and unique pubs in the town centre, as well as the Scheduled

Ancient Monument that is the remains of the old Palace of the Bishop’s of Winchester.

Alton

Alton offers a wide selection of properties to choose from, ticking off the relocate to the country box (and then some).

The mix includes Victorian and Edwardian homes, barn conversions, chocolate box thatched cottages, and modern

new construction. Better more, you’re getting a good deal more here. particularly in contrast to the other cities and

villages immediately over the Surrey border, such as Petersfield, Winchester, and Farnham.

Alton also draws heavily from its ties to the famous literary ladies of Hampshire. A popular Regency Week is held

here every summer, and Jane Austen’s home is located in the charming village of Chawton, just down the road.

Petersfield

This ancient market town has a real community feel, a 69-acre heath and lake (in actual fact a pond, but the biggest

one you’ve ever seen), plus more independent shops, cafes and restaurants than you can shake a stick at. Then there

are the fantastic schools, great train connections and the fact you’re right in the middle of the beautiful South Downs

National Park.

Southsea

Situated east of Old Portsmouth on the southern tip of Portsea Island, Southsea blends classic Victorian charms with

the kind of character and edgy, hipster vibes you’ll find in Shoreditch or Brighton, but without (nearly) the same

exorbitant real estate costs. Great schools, sea air, and great Edw

With its Victorian and Ardian houses, independent stores, and vibrant arts scene, it’s no wonder that most Southsea

residents wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
