‘Shocking’ M27 crash video released

Police have published a “shocking” footage of the minutes before and after a fast driver fatally forced a truck driver off a freeway.

Michal Kaminski, 36, died at the scene on the M27 near Southampton Airport on February 21, 2024, after his truck collided with a gantry.

Ross Neiland, 38, of Littlehampton, had been driving at 90 mph (145 km/h) in heavy rain prior to the incident. On Tuesday, he received a nine-year, nine-month sentence from Southampton Crown Court.

The video released by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and played in court shows Neiland attempting to depart the scene with bags of shoplifted goods.

Members of the public detained him before he was arrested, according to police.

Neiland pleaded guilty to causing death by reckless driving while uninsured and unlicensed, as well as declining to enable a blood test.

He lost control of his Volkswagen Polo and crashed with a lorry and a Nissan Juke on the westbound carriageway, according to police.

Mr Kaminski of Salisbury veered onto the metal support of an overhead gantry as a result of the incident.

The impacted section of the M27 was closed for two days.
Police investigator Phil Hanham stated, “Michal was innocently going about his daily work when his life was cruelly cut short that day by the selfish actions of another driver.”

“The dashcam footage of Neiland speeding despite the heavy rain is incredibly frightening to see.

“He clearly showed no concern for the safety of himself, his passengers, or other road users.

“I would like to pay tribute to the family and friends of Michal who have remained so dignified throughout the investigation and court proceedings,” said the attorney general.
