Premier League makes a formal decision following the Wolves controversy ahead of Aston Villa vs. West Ham.

Peter Bankes has been confirmed by the Premier League to officiate Aston Villa’s forthcoming home game against West Ham United at Villa Park.

Beginning with the 2019–20 season, Bankes rose to the position of top-flight referee and has officiated more than 83 Premier League games in his career. This season, he has managed 13 Premier League games and has accumulated 52 yellow and red cards, averaging four yellows per match.

Throughout his career, he has officiated 20 Aston Villa games; the Villans have won seven of them, drawn nine, and lost the other four.

This season, Bankes has only managed one Aston Villa game, and that was a pivotal 2-1 triumph over reigning champions Manchester City. The West Midlands team’s goals came from Morgan Rogers and Jhon Duran, both of whom are connected to West Ham, while Phil Foden gave the visitors a late consolation goal.

Bankes will collaborate with assistants Nick Greenhalgh and Eddie Smart. The fourth official for the match will be Ruebyn Ricardo, and Paul Tierney and his assistant Tim Wood will handle VAR duties.

Earlier this season, Peter Bankes made headlines for a contentious decision when he denied Forest a penalty kick for what seemed to be a straightforward handball by Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Although the incident sparked considerable controversy among the crowd, it ultimately had little effect on the game’s outcome as high-flying Forest defeated the poor team 3-0. To clarify the decision-making process, the Premier League nevertheless released a statement.

“The referee’s call for no penalty for a potential handball by Ait-Nouri was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed his arm was in a natural position,” the statement, which was released on the Premier League Match Centre account on X (previously Twitter), said.
