Only one Giants player is named a finalist for 2024 AP NFL awards
After a season to forget for the New York Giants, rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers is finally giving fans something to celebrate. Roll out the red carpet because the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has been named a finalist for the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, essentially marking the lone bright spot in an otherwise disastrous 3-14 campaign.
For a team starving for any sliver of hope, Nabers’ outstanding rookie year was the lifeline fans needed. For real.
Nabers shattered records in his debut season, posting an NFL rookie record 109 receptions (for a wide receiver)—a number that also broke the Giants’ single-season franchise mark set by Steve Smith in 2009. The LSU product didn’t just pile up catches; he also racked up 1,204 receiving yards, the second most by a Giants rookie behind Odell Beckham Jr.’s 1,305 in 2014. Add seven touchdown grabs, and it’s no surprise Nabers finds himself in elite company among finalists for the league’s top rookie honor.
The other nominees include Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, and Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas Jr.—a group that features two of Nabers’ former LSU teammates. But while this is one of the most impressive rookie classes the league has ever seen, Nabers’ consistency, even in the face of a massively struggling Giants offense, makes his case as strong as anyone’s.
Malik Nabers deserves to win Offensive Rookie of the Year
It’s no exaggeration to say that without Nabers, the Giants’ 2024 season would’ve been downright unwatchable. As injuries and poor roster construction derailed the team, Nabers became the offensive focal point, delivering record-breaking performances and giving fans a reason to keep tuning in every Sunday.
What makes Nabers’ season even more impressive is the context. He wasn’t catching passes from Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow. He was grinding it out in an offense that featured Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito, and Tim Boyle. The fact he delivered historic numbers amid all that chaos is as obvious a case as ever to give him the award.
The AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award may not mean much in the big picture of a 3-14 season, but it does symbolize hope for the Giants. With Nabers at the helm, New York finally has a building block on offense—a player who can help turn things around in 2025 and beyond.
Whether Nabers takes home the trophy on February 6 or not, his rookie campaign was legendary. It’s now (unfortunately) up to general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll to ensure his efforts don’t go to waste. Good luck with that. The Giants can’t afford to waste the best player they’ve had in years.
