“Magnificent” – Carlton Palmer reacts to finer details of Sheffield United, Tom Cannon deal

Carlton Palmer feels Tom Cannon will be worth the £10 million Sheffield United reportedly paid to recruit him from Leicester City.

Sky Sports reports that the Blades have agreed to a £10 million contract with the Premier League club.

The 22-year-old spent the first part of the season on loan with Stoke City, where he scored nine goals in 22 appearances.

Chris Wilder will be hopeful that his forthcoming arrival would help their automatic promotion hopes, since the team is currently in the top two.

Carlton Palmer complimented Sheffield United’s new owners for supporting Wilder in the transfer market this month.

He believes the fee for signing Cannon, which may reach to £13 million with add-ons, is reasonable for the Ireland international.

“Sheffield United’s new owners have backed Chris Wilder in this January transfer window,” according to Palmer.

“I think bringing in Tom Cannon is an excellent business decision.

“£10 million upfront is a lot, with £3 million in add-ons, but I believe it is a reasonable price.

“I believe Tom will score goals to lead Sheffield United to victory.”

“I said at the start of the season that Leeds would go up with Sheffield United, and I think the business that Chris Wilder has done in the summer, the business he’s just done now, he’s brought in very, very good players.”

Palmer claims that Cannon may score at least ten goals for Sheffield United this season and will be prepared for life in the Premier League if they make it.

“Tom will score goals, without a doubt,” he added.

“If they create opportunities, he will score goals.”

“He scored nine goals in 22 Championship appearances on loan with Stoke City, a team suffering in the bottom half of the league.

“So he’s got nine goals; if he’s in a team that creates chances and plays like Sheffield United, you’d expect him to have at least ten goals by the end of the season, if not more.”

“And he’ll be able to perform in the Premier League, so I think it’s a fantastic piece of business.”

“If you’re going to bring in a striker to play in the Premier League, you’re going to pay £20 to £30 million, so I think it’s a reasonable price.

“A good bit of business by Chris Wilder and I think you’re going to see Sheffield United kick on now and take a stranglehold on the Championship in the second half of the season.”

Cannon signing is a big investment in Wilder

Bringing in Cannon for this much money demonstrates the new owners’ commitment to investing in the first team and Wilder, which is great.

The fee is a bit much for someone whose Championship performances haven’t been very impressive, despite scoring nine goals in 22 games for an unimpressive Stoke team.

Four of those goals came in the Potters’ 6-1 victory against Portsmouth at the start of the season, leaving him with just five in 21 games, which isn’t a particularly impressive record.

There’s a chance his record will improve if he plays in a better team, but £10 million will put him under pressure to deliver right away.
