Ipswich Town: Defender George Edmundson set to join Championship side Middlesborough on permanent deal with fee agreed

Ipswich Town defender George Edmundson is set to join Championship side Middlesbrough on a permanent deal.

The two clubs have agreed a fee and a two-and-a-half year deal for the transfer of the 27-year-old centre-back, SuffolkNews’ media partners TWTD understand.

Town will receive £600,000 plus further top-ups, some shorter term, then £350,000 if Boro are promoted, with an extra £500,000 if they then stay in the Premier League.

Edmundson has been on loan at the Teesiders since August, who are currently fifth in the Championship, with the Blues activating a recall clause for him earlier this week.

The Manchester-born defender was previously the subject of two failed bids from Boro.

Edmundson was out of contract with Town at the end of the season when he would have been able to leave on a free transfer.

As he had played for both the Blues and Boro this season, he could only have moved to Michael Carrick’s men during this window.

The former Oldham defender joined Town on a four-year deal for about £1 million from Scottish side Rangers in the summer of 2021.

He has made 71 starts and four sub appearances while at Portman Road, scoring once.
