Huddersfield football team that loves to lose as they find new ways of hitting weight loss goals

They’ve lost 450 pounds

After members of a Huddersfield football club lost an amazing 450 pounds in a single year, the team just likes to lose.

Every Monday at Moor End Academy, Huddersfield’s MAN v FAT Football group has been essential in helping 42

local men lose an incredible 450 pounds of extra weight in 2024.

Jamie Coley, a 32-year-old member of the team, has seen a major change in his life after using the program to shed

more than four stone in the last year. An campaign called MAN v FAT aims to help obese and overweight men who

have a BMI higher than 27.5 lose excess weight.

Weekly football games and lifestyle coaching sessions help achieve this. Before playing a 30-minute six-a-side

football match, players are weighed during these sessions, and teams can receive additional goal bonuses depending

on how much weight they lose overall.

The team’s position in the club’s overall league table is then determined by its overall weight loss and match results.

In Kirklees, over 67% of adults are overweight or obese, according to data published by Public Health England in

April 2023. The program has helped Jamie, a member of the Huddersfield club, lose more than four stone.

He stated: “I began out weighing over 25.5 stones, but I’ve managed to reduce that to 21 stones, which is just over

15% of my total weight. It has made it possible for me to engage in sports like football and running with my kids.

“I noticed that I was putting on a lot of weight after having a family and balancing the responsibilities of full-time

employment and other obligations. My portion sizes were too large, and my eating habits were inconsistent. I would

frequently order takeaway because it was convenient when I got home late.

“Recognising the negative impact this lifestyle was having on my weight and overall health, I embarked on various

diets that proved to be unrealistic, particularly given the challenges of maintaining a healthy diet while working as a

truck driver.”

Jamie claims that his diet was mostly made up of chocolate, sugary drinks, fast food, and other unhealthy options,

which left him feeling depressed and unfulfilled.

“I attempted to join a gym and experimented with numerous diets and weight loss programs, but none of them

effectively engaged me or were physically feasible for me to sustain.

“My self-esteem suffered as a result. After seeing the Facebook post several times, I decided to take a chance and join

up for MAN v FAT despite my concerns about being evaluated solely on my size. The chance to play football, which I

used to love, drew me in. My coach got in touch with me a few days after I enrolled and helped me get going.

Jamie claims that MAN v FAT has been crucial to his weight loss efforts because it has given him a football regimen

and weekly weigh-ins that provide him with concrete proof of his improvement.

Reaching his objectives has greatly increased his self-confidence. “This instills a sense of accomplishment and pride,”

he continued. I now keep a careful record of everything I eat, including meals, snacks, beverages, fruits, and

vegetables. This helps me to pinpoint my strengths and places for development. I can examine any minor weight gain

and modify my diet as needed thanks to this self-monitoring.”

He claims that his relationship with his colleagues is what truly makes the event memorable for him. “The chance to

engage with other club members is the most satisfying part for me. We have a same objective and consistently

support each other’s achievements. This journey has been much more enjoyable and fulfilling because of the

friendship we have created.

“MAN v FAT offers a helpful community where people can come together to better their lives, support one another,

and take pleasure in the companionship that comes with playing football. This all-encompassing strategy helps

create an enjoyable and stimulating atmosphere that promotes weight loss.
