‘Fantastic’: Tavernier and Clement agree on ‘incredible’ Rangers player after Man United loss

Rangers could celebrate a “sensational” Cyriel Dessers strike, which appeared to pull a result out of the bag in the most dramatic of circumstances, as well as a couple of extremely impressive cameos from teen sensations Bailey Rice and Findlay Curtis, in addition to being on the verge of a famous and hard-earned point at Old Trafford. But Bruno Fernandes’ heroics in the 92nd minute would guarantee that this was a story of “so close yet so far” from a Rangers squad that has a history of putting the big players on the continent to the test.

However, Philippe Clement had no desire to mope. Even with Fernandes’ heartbreaking stoppage-time contributions, this was still a commendable performance. For some of the Ibrox crowd, it was a night of atonement. Dessers hinted at his Rangers future just last week when he said he intended to have confrontational talks with the club’s management after dropping to third place and drawing interest from overseas. The striker has scored four goals in two games since making those remarks, including a spectacular solo goal at Old Trafford.

A few brilliant saves later, especially from Manuel Ugarte, guaranteed the goalkeeper would go from zero to hero in the same half, even though Jack Butland may have given Man United the lead in disastrous circumstances when he somehow forced the ball backwards into his own net under pressure from young Toby Collyer.James Tavernier, the Rangers captain at full time, described him as “fantastic” at moments and “incredible” at others. Although Butland was the reason Man United took the lead, he was also the reason the score remained at 1-0 until Dessers came on the other end.

Despite Rangers’ mistake in Manchester United’s defeat, Philippe Clement supports Jack Butland.

Two things that we could or ought to do better were the Man United goals. However, Jack also came to our aid several times throughout the second half. In his press conference following the game, Clement remarked, “That’s the life of a goalkeeper.” Therefore, I won’t be concentrating only on [the errors].” There are, in my opinion, a lot of advantages. The way the team handled the ball when playing against Manchester United under the current situation, being so courageous with the ball and producing so much, is encouraging, in my opinion.[Dessers] performed admirably and once again shown his excellent mindset. What he displayed during each moment I spent in the building. Under no circumstances did I ever see a different Cyriel.
